KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 -The national men's hockey squad continued their winning streak when they defeated Wales 3-1 in their United Kingdom Tour Series 2021 at Reading Hockey Club on Tuesday.
The victory in their fourth test match, which is also the last of the tour series, was also the second success in a row recorded by A. Arulselvaraj's team against Wales after a narrow 4-3 win on Saturday.
Commenting on yesterday's result, Arulselvaraj described his squad as having achieved one of the goals in the tour series by learning to play and winning matches in stressful situations.
“A good victory for Malaysian hockey and also Malaysians. This win was even sweeter as we went through a three-hour journey to get to the match venue, we played in cold weather and even rain.
"This is also our main purpose in the United Kingdom Tour because we want the players to play under pressure and win matches," he said in a statement today.
Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) talisman, Faizal Saari emerged as the hero when he scored two goals a minute apart, the first through a penalty corner in the 17th minute and then a field goal in the 18th minute.
Ioan Wall closed the gap for Wales by converting a penalty corner in the 58th minute but Muhammad Razie Abd Rahim slotted home a penalty corner in the 59th minute to confirm Malaysia's victory.
Meanwhile, the victory was also a sweet memory for the country's young player, Muhammad Shafiq Hassan who made his first appearance for the Speedy Tigers in the match.
"This victory also boosts my spirits to remain in the national men's senior squad," he said.
Apart from the two wins over Wales, Malaysia also recorded one win and one loss against Ireland, in their four test matches in the United Kingdom.
Malaysia next face France in a friendly match this Friday starting at 7 pm Malaysian time at the Wales Hockey Centre, Cardiff.
Meanwhile, the National Men's Special Project Squad got their second victory in their 2021 United Kingdom Tour Series by defeating the England Under-21 squad 5-4 at Bisham Abbey, yesterday.
