Palestinian Ambassador declares Malaysia, Palestine as 'winners' in upcoming match

14/09/2021 05:28 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 -- The match between Malaysia and Palestine in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers in Palestine will only be played on Sept 22 but in the eyes of Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia Walid Abu Ali, both nations are already ‘winners’.

Walid showed great sportsmanship spirit after meeting the Malaysian squad at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang before their departure for Palestine last night, pointing out that having to host the Malaysian team on Palestine land was itself a victory for both nations, regardless of the outcome of the match next week.

“Despite the Malaysian team will be facing Palestine as an opponent, His Excellency hope (sic) they enjoy their memorable moments in Palestine and assure that the Palestinian people will always welcome Malaysia, particularly the Malaysian team with an open heart,” the Palestinian Embassy said in a Facebook post today.

Walid also took the opportunity to wish good luck to the Malaysian women’s football squad ahead of their opening fixture of Group H against Thailand at the Faisal Al-Husseini International Stadium, Jerusalem, Palestine, on Sunday.

A total of 28 teams will be competing in the qualifiers, with four groups of four teams each and four groups consisting of three teams each.

The champions of each of the eight groups will qualify for the 12-team Asian Cup Finals, with hosts India as well as the three best teams from the 2018 edition - Japan, Australia and China - having qualified earlier.

The 2022 Finals will be held from Jan 20 to Feb 6.
