KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 -- National Moto2 rider Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah is excited and touched by the interest shown by Tunku Mahkota Johor (TMJ) Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim to sponsor him.
The 27-year-old rider said it would definitely motivate him in his motor-racing career which, he admitted, has been getting tougher since 2019.
"No words can describe this. Although he hasn't helped me yet, his positive words have given me the impetus to continue riding. We all know that the country is currently in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, so there have been sponsors who have pulled out and can't afford to give me 100 per cent support.
"For now, I am using my own pocket money to buy flight tickets as well as for training and accommodation purposes. This is tough on me but, whatever it is, I will do my best with my NTS RW Racing GP team,” he told Bernama today.
Tunku Ismail had expressed his interest in sponsoring Hafizh when replying to a question by an Instagram user last Saturday whether he would be keen to do so.
Hafizh said there had been no discussions and he also does not know what kind of assistance Tunku Ismail would offer him, but he hoped that the TMJ would grant him an audience when he returns home.
The rider also expressed his gratitude for the efforts of his NTS Racing team who, according to him, were very positive and highly motivated to keep improving the team's performance in each race.
Hafizh recorded his best result for this season on May 30 when he came in ninth at the Italian Grand Prix (GP) at the Mugello Circuit.
However, at last weekend’s Barcelona GP at the Catalunya Circuit, he could only finish in 20th spot due to his new aerodynamic fairing, which resulted in a sudden rise of his machine's temperature, thus reducing speed.
"I admit that the new aerodynamic fairing has its advantages and the team's test in the wind tunnel found that it was 10 per cent better in terms of top speed. But we did not expect that on race day the temperature would rise and result in a reduction of 10 kilometre per hour (km/h) to 15 km/h in speed,” he said.
Hafizh is currently 23rd in the Moto2 world championship standings with eight points from seven races.
