KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- Kuala Lumpur United Football Club (KLUFC) are set to take on Selangor FC, better known as the Red Giants, in the inaugural Piala Prihatin Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan (Prihatin Cup) match next week as a part of their pre-season preparations.
The match set to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras at 8 pm on Feb 27, was announced during the KLUFC 2021 season launch broadcast on Astro Arena. A portion of the proceeds from the airing of the match will be channeled to charity.
KLUFC Board of Directors member Khalid Abdul Samad said that the idea for the match is in line with the club’s long-term goal to create 'hype' around the sport as well foster support for the team.
"We want to restore glory to Kuala Lumpur football as it was during the time of Fandi Ahmad as well as maintain a niche market for the team, which is Kuala Lumpur folks.
"Now, with a private approach and with the presence of an experienced Chief Executive Officer, we hope to achieve this…We want to spark a new trend that will attract more and more support from KLites and other fans alike," the former Federal Territories Minister said.
Current Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa, who was also present during the launch, said that his ministry is willing to explore opportunities in providing training infrastructure for the team by taking fully into consideration that it is now a fully privatised team.
"This is to ensure that whatever we do (in terms of sponsorship) is in respect of regulations and procedures. Having said this, I am also responsible for any team that represents the name of Kuala Lumpur to be handled well," he said.
Apart from this, the City Boys team alongside Astro also announced that a behind-the-scenes docuseries is in the making which will showcase the team going through the upcoming 2021 Malaysian Super League season. It is said will provide a never-before-seen perspective of the club as they make their return to the top tier.
KLUFC will be making their return to the Super league this year after spending last season in the Premier League, with their first match against Penang FC on March 6.
