COVID-19: Football clubs advised to spend within their means

12/02/2021 06:15 PM

MELAKA, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- The managements of football clubs in the country have been advised to spend within their allocation to avoid facing financial issues, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) technical director Datuk Ong Kim Swee said during that period, the national football industry could not operate in full capacity and this could affect the sponsorship aspect which is one of the main financial resources of most clubs.

“This could have insidious consequences on the performance of players too because it also involves the issue of salary payment,” he told reporters when met at his house in Lorong Pandan here, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration, today.

Ong, who is also the Football Coaches Association of Malaysia (PJBM) deputy president suggested that the club management find a stronger financial source and not rely entirely on sponsorship so that  operations can run more smoothly.

Ong said various plans related to grassroots development programmes including coaching courses had been planned to strengthen the quality of players in terms of performance, but it could not be implemented at this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Melaka-born said the programme not only involved club coaches but also instructors for grassroots development programmes involving sports schools in the country.

“We expect the programme to be implemented by the middle of this year if the spread of COVID-19 in the country can be contained," he said.

Commenting on the Super League to be held next March, he was confident that all the teams involved were mentally and physically prepared to perform well in the championship.
