KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 -- The Petronas Sprinta Racing team have signed South African Darryn Binder from CIP Green Power on a one-year deal for next season's Moto3 championship.
Team director Johan Stigefelt, who described the 22-year-old rider's inclusion as timely, expressed confidence that Binder, who joined the Moto3 championship in 2015 after graduating from the Red Bull Rookies Cup, would help them achieve more success.
“We have seen that he is an aggressive, talented and good rider, especially on race day. This is the kind of guy that you want to work with, who wants to take the next step in his career, and the type of rider who you want in your team who can challenge for the front,” he was quoted as saying in the statement issued by the team today.
“This will definitely be the target with him. Binder has shown himself to be one of the hottest prospects in the junior category, regularly in the thick of the action during the current season, including setting the fastest lap in this year’s Austrian GP.
Binder, meanwhile, said he was excited about helping the Malaysia-based team achieve more success next season.
“I feel like we can do a really good job together and have a bright future. Personally, I think that this is the best opportunity to make the last step up to continually be at the top of the standings.
“Our target will be to fight for the top positions at every race,” said Binder, who achieved a career-best second placing at the 2019 Argentina GP.
Petronas Sprinta Racing are now represented by John McPhee of Great Britain and Malaysian Khairul Idham Pawi in Moto3.
