KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 -- Malaysia Rugby (MR) has proposed that Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan compete as three different teams and rugby be turned into an Under-19 event for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) beginning from 2022.
MR vice-president Fahmy Jalil said that by competing as three different teams, instead of combining to form one Federal Territories outfit, the teams would be able to produce more players.
“All three have their own 12-player teams. When they combine, maybe only four players from each team will be selected while the other eight (from each team) won’t get the chance to feature in Sukma,” he said after attending a meeting with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) yesterday.
On the proposal to turn it from an Under-21 to an Under-19 event, he said this was to ensure there was continuity in the progress of players aged between 12 and 18 placed under the National Rugby Development Programme (NRDP).
Meanwhile, Fahmy, who is also the MR tournament director, said the Johor Rugby Stadium in Mount Austin was all set to host the Johor Sukma next year.
“The special rugby stadium has all the facilities required, can accommodate 580 spectators and the pitch-size also fulfils all the criteria needed to hold international tournaments. Together with Johor Rugby, we (MR) plan to host Asian level tournaments at the stadium,” he explained.
