KUALA LUMPUR, 20 May -- Just three days after restructuring the coaching set-up for the senior team, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria today announced another coaching shake up -- this time for the junior squad.
The junior shuttlers are currently undergoing training at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara under youth development director Datuk Misbun Sidek.
Former national singles coaches Hazwan Jamaluddin and Poh Chai Boon have been put in charge of the Under-18 singles department, while the doubles players will be managed by three doubles specialists -- Pang Cheh Chang, Vountus Indra Mawan and Lutfi Zaim.
Former All-England winner Hafiz Hashim, together with Alvin Chew, will be tasked with coaching the Under-15 boys.
Kwan Yoke Meng, a member of the 1992 Thomas Cup winning squad, has been given a new portfolio and will head the development of the Under-13 girls’ department, while experienced coach Zhang Hong Yu will oversee the Under-15 and Under-14 girls.
Norza is confident that the coaches, with guidance from Misbun, would able to instill a high level of discipline and a winning culture among the players at a young age as well as assist in their transition into the senior national team.
“All the coaches have collectively progressed through the ranks of the BAM development set-up while Hong Yu has spent two decades as a junior coach in Malaysia. They know our system well and are eager to pass on their know-how to the youth players.
“The continuous long-term development of the national juniors remains our utmost priority as we look to unearth the next generation of world beaters. We will continue to provide optimal environment to facilitate the development of all the 77 young players at the state-of-the-art ABM,” Norza said in the statement.
