RAMALLAH, Nov 29 (Bernama-WAFA) -- Each year on Nov 29, the United Nations observes the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, coinciding with the anniversary of the General Assembly’s 1947 adoption of Partition Resolution 181.
The International Day of Solidarity has gained added significance over the past two years in light of the catastrophic conditions in the Gaza Strip resulting from the genocidal war launched by the Israeli occupation army on Oct 7, 2023, Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported.
The war has left more than 160,000 people killed or injured, most of them children and women, in addition to over 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and a famine that has killed dozens of children and elderly people, in one of the world’s gravest humanitarian disasters.
In condemnation of these massacres, thousands of demonstrations, sit-ins, and solidarity events were organised in streets, main squares, universities and schools across numerous world capitals and cities.
Alongside popular mobilisation, international solidarity has also been reflected in legal action against the occupation and its officials at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, the severing of diplomatic ties with the occupation system and a series of recognitions of the State of Palestine.
This has culminated in the ICC’s issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant.
On this day, cultural activities, political festivals and mass solidarity gatherings are held by solidarity movements and political committees, as well as by Palestinian embassies and supporters of the just Palestinian cause.
In response to a United Nations call, governments and civil society groups worldwide carry out a range of annual activities to mark the day, including issuing solidarity messages, holding meetings, distributing printed and media materials, and screening films.
At United Nation Headquarters in New York, the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People convenes a special annual session to observe the day.
The UN Division for Palestinian Rights also publishes a yearly bulletin featuring delivered statements and received messages and organises additional events, including a Palestinian exhibition or cultural program hosted by the Committee in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine, alongside film screenings.
The International Day of Solidarity provides an opportunity to draw the world’s attention to the enduring reality that the Palestinian question remains unresolved, despite the passage of decades and the adoption of numerous related international resolutions.
The Palestinian people have yet to secure their inalienable rights as affirmed by the General Assembly: self-determination free of external interference; the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the 1967 borders; and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to the homes and property from which they were displaced.
On Nov 29, 2012, Palestine joined the United Nations as a non-member observer state and on Sept 30, 2015, the Palestinian flag was raised at UN headquarters and offices worldwide.
