MELAKA, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Brunei DPMM FC secured their first win the the Super League after six matches when they edged Melaka FC 1-0 at the Hang Jebat Stadium tonight, thanks to a solitary goal from a penalty converted by their import striker, Jordan Murray.
The match started lively with Melaka almost taking the lead as early as the eighth minute through Abdul Azim Rahim, but his attempt struck the post. This was followed by Aiman Danish Abdul Azim’s 14th-minute effort that went just wide.
DPMM also came close to scoring in the 17th minute but Hanif Farhan Azman’s shot sailed over the bar.
The hosts were awarded a penalty after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review found Abdul Azim had been brought down by Fairuz Zakaria in the 20th minute.
However, the spot kick taken by Abdul Azim himself in the 26th minute was brilliantly saved by DPMM goalkeeper Haimie Abdullah Nyaring.
In the 36th minute, DPMM broke the deadlock when Murray converted a penalty after the ball struck Melaka player Irfan Zakaria’s hand in the box, and the score remained unchanged until half-time.
At the start of the second half, Melaka tried to mount a comeback and nearly equalised in the 47th minute through a direct shot from Afeeq Iqmal Rosli, but his attempt went over the crossbar.
Melaka were awarded another penalty after VAR found Afeeq had been fouled in the box, but Danilo Augusto Magalhaes’ 68th-minute strike was again saved by Haimie.
DPMM were reduced to 10 men in the 82nd minute when their import player, Jordan Rodrigues, was shown the red card after receiving a second yellow for fouling a home player.
Undeterred, Melaka continued their relentless attacks but Irfan Zakaria’s long-range shot in the 84th minute went wide, while Shahrel Fikri’s last-minute attempt was denied by the visiting goalkeeper.
Even with eight minutes of added time, no further goals were scored.
