IPOH, May 25 (Bernama) -- The previous plan to use of electric vans to replace pink vans on Pangkor Island has been changed to low carbon emission vans and it is still in the process of implementation, the Perak State Assembly was told today.
State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNPk) through its subsidiary Majuperak Holdings Berhad (Majuperak) had carried out a feasibility study and found that support for low carbon emission vans was much higher than for electric vans.
"This project is in the final stage to be brought to the State Executive Council to get a decision and policy approval for the change and implementation of the project," he said during the question and answer session at the assembly's sitting at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan here.
Mohammad Nizar was replying to a question from Norhaslinda Zakaria (PN-Pangkor) who wanted to know the status of the initiative to replace taxis on Pangkor Island with electric vehicles that was announced in June 2020 with an allocation of RM10 million.
Mohammad Nizar said in July 2020, the Federal Government had allocated RM12 million for a project to supply electric scooters and electric vans for the purpose of promoting Pangkor Island as a "Green and Sustainable Tourism Island"
Of the amount, he said RM2 million was allocated for the supply of electric scooters and RM10 million for electric vans, but later modifications were made by the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) to use the entire fund for the supply of electric vans.
"Thereafter, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir as the Pangkor assemblyman at that time had proposed the conversion of electric vans to low carbon emission vans during the the First Meeting of the Fifth Year of the 14th State Assembly of Perak Darul Ridzuan," he said.
