LANGKAWI, May 25 (Bernama) -- The 504 Regiment of the Territorial Army aims to recruit 330 new members from public and private higher education institutions (IPTs) in Perlis every year.

Regent of Perlis, Brigadier General Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, said the effort was part of the regiment’s initiative to develop the country’s military reserve force.

“The 504 Regiment sets this target after signing the memorandum of agreement (MoA) with 11 IPTs in Perlis,” he said here last night.

The commander of the Territorial Army’s 504 Regiment said this after witnessing the MoA signing ceremony involving four IPTs, namely Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Islamic University College of Perlis (KUIPs), Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Polytechnic and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Perlis.

Deputy commander Lt Col Lasahi Laiji signed the MoA on behalf of the Territorial Army.

The IPTs were represented by UniMAP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman Sauli; Training and Strategic Coordinator of the Reserve Officer Training Unit (PALAPES), UiTM Perlis Dr Khairul Afendy Hashim; Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Polytechnic director Maj (Honorary) Abdul Malek Hassan and KUIPs rector Prof Dr Muhamad Rozaimi Ramle.

Also in attendance was the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis Maj (Honorary) Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.

Elaborating, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin said the regiment aims for each institution to recruit 30 students annually, making a total of 330 new members per year.

He said the plan would be implemented through three phases of collaboration, namely with public IPTs (first phase), government and private agencies (second phase) and village development and security committees and mosque committee members (third phase).

“This effort is in line with the Territorial Army Strategic Plan 2022-2030 to achieve 80,000 voluntary recruitment by 2025,” he said.

Tuanku Syed Faizuddin and Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah are currently in Langkawi to attend the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA’23).
