KOTA BHARU, May 12 (Bernama) - The National Kenaf and Tobacco Board (LKTN) has established collaborations with private companies to strengthen and ensure the market demand for kenaf.
LKTN chairman Ab Aziz Ab Kadir said with the collaborations in place, he is confident that the planting of the kenaf crop can be increased to cover up to 10,000 hectares by 2023.
Kenaf is a fibrous crop with various commercial uses, including as building materials, paper products, and animal feed.
“This year alone, there have been several memorandums of understanding (MOUs) signed with large companies such as Dallis Enterprise in the mattress business and Eadeco Non-Woven Sdn Bhd in the development of applications for non-woven products, as well as the marketing of kenaf products globally.
"LKTN also signed an MOU with KMDI Holding Sdn Bhd to develop kenaf cluster farms, housing construction, and kenaf-based products for the construction industry," he told the media at the LKTN 2022 Aidilfitri celebration today.
Also present was LKTN director-general Idris Mohd Salleh.
Commenting on Kenaf Venture Global Sdn Bhd’s progress at the international level so far, Ab Aziz said the company has a strategic partnership with PT Kenaf Fiber Global (Indonesia) to cultivate kenaf for product development with three universities from Germany and the United Kingdom.
LKTN will also open an office at RTC Gopeng, Perak on June 1 as part of its branch expansion throughout the country, Ab Aziz said.
"The Perak State Agriculture Development Corporation has also developed a complete loop, or chain from kenaf cultivation right up to product development,” he said.
