KUCHING, Nov 21 -- A total of 584 temporary relief centres (PPS) that can accommodate 182,325 victims have been provided by the Sarawak state government as preparation to face possible floods during this monsoon season.

 Sarawak Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said they comprised 134 PPS in Kuching, Samarahan (49), Serian (33), Sri Aman (39), Betong (34), Sarikei (25), Sibu (48), Kapit (28), Mukah (36), Bintulu (26), Miri (107) and Limbang (25).

“The State Welfare Department (JKM) has also prepared necessities for flood victims at all the PPS. The items are being kept at the department’s depot in Kota Samarahan,” she told reporters here today.

Fatimah said about RM400,000 have been spent to purchase the items which included mattresses, pillows, blankets, towels, baby diapers adding that the state government had also identified 548 volunteers who would assist JKM at the relief centres.

She said that a total of RM195,000 has also been spent to provide dry food for flood victims and the supplies were currently being stored at 13 forward bases.

The forward bases are located at Sekolah Kebangsaan Beradek and Kampung Semilang in Kuching, Kampung Long Busang, Bukit Mabong (Kapit), Rh Dilang Ulu Anap, Klinik Tab Timber, Rh Ado Kakus (Bintulu), Long Teran Kiri, Long Teran Kanan, Long Bemang, Long Ikang, Long Iman Mulu, Long Loyang and Long Jegan (Miri).

Fatimah said the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee had decided that cooking is not allowed at the PPS to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and flood victims would be provided with packed food by appointed suppliers.
