GEORGE TOWN, March 26 -- The Penang government has launched its COVID-19 Fund to accept donations from the private and public sectors to help the needy in the state following COVID-19 outbreak.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in a press conference broadcast live via his personal Facebook page today said that donations to the fund could be made via the Maybank account (557054620930) and the account details could be obtained through the website ‘www.PenangLawanCovid19.com’.

"Yesterday, I said that the state government had begun taking measures and I invited the private sector to come together to help those in need.

"As a result, I have received a lot of offers for donations from the private sector. In just this one day, the private sector, especially in Penang has pledged contributions of almost RM2 million," he said.

On the application process for the Penang People's Aid Package announced yesterday, he said the state government already had the data of all the categories involved so recipients need not register, and the money would be distributed to the target groups beginning next month.

He said for the Penang Business Continuity Zero Interest Loan, the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) would announce the application process by March 31.
