KKB BY-ELECTION: PM DENIES CLAIMS THAT MIC IS NOT SUPPORTING GOVT CANDIDATE

21/04/2024 04:02 PM

SHAH ALAM, April 21 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim refuted claims that MIC is not supporting the Unity Government candidate in Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) state by-election campaign if the candidate is not from Barisan Nasional (BN).

"It's not true.. MIC president (Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran) called me, he will go for (campaigning) tomorrow.. Monday," he said briefly to reporters after attending the PKR 25th Convention, which took place at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) here, today.

Anwar said this when commenting on MIC's intention not to campaign in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election if the government candidate is not from BN.

The media previously reported that Vigneswaran said the party would not campaign in the same by-election because it was not contested by a BN candidate.

The Kuala Kubu Baru State Assembly by-election was held following the death of incumbent Lee Kee Hiong from DAP who represented Pakatan Harapan (PH) on March 21.

The list of candidates to represent the Unity Government in the by-election has been submitted to Anwar through the recent Unity Government Consultation Council Meeting.

BN also previously agreed to respect the pact that the incumbent state party should be given priority to field a candidate to represent the government.
