ALOR SETAR, May 17 -- The swearing-in of Jeneri assemblyman Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor as the 14th Kedah Menteri Besar today has ended the speculations about the change of state government.
Change of government in Kedah is closely linked to the country's political crisis in February which saw Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) exited the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition and followed by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's appointment as Prime Minister.
Following these developments, some states, namely Johor, Melaka and Perak have seen a change of government and today Kedah.
Here is a chronology of the political events in Kedah from February until today:
*Feb 24: Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announces the party exiting PH.
*Feb 26: Kedah MB Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir asks to be given time before issuing any statement on the political situation in the state following the country's political crisis.
*Feb 27: Mukhriz announces that Kedah is a mixed PH and Bersatu government.
*March 3: Mukhriz is confident that he will continue to lead the state government and explains that PH and Bersatu have enough state seats.
*March 4: Mukhriz is determined to defend Kedah, which is the only state led by a menteri besar from Bersatu.
*May 6: Kedah PAS expresses confidence to take over the state administration from the mixed state government led by Mukhriz.
*May 12: Two Kedah assemblymen from PKR, Azman Nasrudin (Lunas) and Dr Robert Ling Kui Ee (Sidam), quit the party and threw their support behind the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government under the leadership of Muhyiddin.
*May 12: Kedah Opposition chief Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor announces that 19 out of 36 Kedah assemblymen have lost confidence in Mukhriz's leadership.
Muhammad Sanusi says they are 15 PAS, two UMNO and two PKR assemblymen.
He claims that four Bersatu assemblymen have also lost confidence in Mukhriz.
*May 13: Mukhriz, at a press conference, stresses that he is still Kedah MB and that the state government is still intact.
*May 13: Three party presidents of UMNO, PAS and Bersatu meet the Sultan of Kedah, Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, to present 23 statutory declarations (SDs) from state assemblymen proposing a new candidate for the menteri besar post.
*May 15: All 36 Kedah assemblymen have an audience with Sultan Sallehuddin at Wisma Darul Aman, Alor Setar.
*May 17: Mukhriz resigns as Kedah MB.
*May 17: Jeneri assemblyman Muhammad Sanusi sworn in as the 14th Kedah Menteri Besar after Kedah Sultan consented to his appointment.
