SHAH ALAM, June 21 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) held a tree planting programme with the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia today to commemorate its 25th anniversary as a university.

UiTM deputy vice chancellor (industry, community and alumni network) Prof Dr Jamalunlaili Abdullah said the planting of 250 trees of various species by university staff, students and alumni was a symbolic celebration of UiTM as a university and reflected its aspirations to become a sustainable university.

"We also discussed with the Forestry Department and (our programme partner) MNRB Holdings Berhad for them to sponsor similar programmes and conduct simultaneous tree planting events at all UiTM branches and campuses in the country.

“If we can do this, it will surely help speed up the government’s mission of achieving the target of planting 100 million trees by next year,” he said at the tree planting site near UiTM Hotel here today.

Meanwhile, the Forestry Department said in a statement today that the tree planting programme was part of its initiative to contribute to the environmental sustainability of educational institutions, and boost awareness among students and university staff about the importance of forest coverage.

It is also in line with the department’s commitment to the Malaysian Greening Programme through the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign, a national agenda to enrich the country’s natural heritage, the department added.

The trees planted today were all endemic to the country and included meranti bunga, penaga lilin, tongkat ali and pokok merawan kanching (hopea subalata), all of which are classified under International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) red list as endangered species.

Forestry Department Forest Plantation and Protection, Agro Forestry & Reforestation section chief Muhamad Hafni Ahmad Saraji and MNRB Holdings Berhad president and group chief executive officer (CEO) Berhad Zaharudin Daud were also present for the event.
