KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- The torch relay for the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) Sarawak 2024, which began in the northern region of the state, is approaching its final stages to conclude in the southern regions of Samarahan and Kuching on June 22 and 23 respectively.

Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer and Sarawak Sports Council director Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan said these two regions will be the 11th and 12th locations for the torch relay, aimed at enhancing the atmosphere leading up to the Games, which will be held from Aug 17 to 24.

The relay passed through Limbang, Miri, Bintulu, Mukah, Sibu, Kapit, Sarikei, Betong, Sri Aman and Serian before this.

“Twelve regions are involved in the SUKMA torch relay, even though only nine regions will directly participate in the games. The goal is to promote the event so that the community can feel the excitement of its organisation.

“The torch relay received a very encouraging response in the ten regions it passed through, and we expect the same in Samarahan, with over 2,000 visitors anticipated to enliven the final relay location in Kuching,” he said after appearing as a guest on RTM Radio's ‘Konti Sukan’ programme today.

Awang Putrayusrie said about 1,200 Sarawak athletes are confirmed to participate in SUKMA and are currently in the final phase of preparation for the event.

He also expressed hope that the Sarawak contingent will secure their 14th overall championship title in this edition, their last being in 1994.

The 21st SUKMA will mark the third time Sarawak is hosting the event after 1990 and 2016.

SUKMA Sarawak will feature 37 sports involving 488 events, and bring together 12,619 athletes and officials, including an invited contingent from Brunei.
