KOTA BHARU, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- A total of 3,000 helmets will be distributed to visitors of the three-day Kelantan MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR), which kicks off today, said state Road Transport Department (JPJ) head of Road Safety and Corporate Unit Suriati Sulaiman.
She said the free helmet exchange received an overwhelming response from the people, with visitors beginning to queue in front of the Transport Ministry’s booth as early as 7.30 am.
“We are distributing a total of 1,000 each day, 600 helmets in the morning session and 400 in the afternoon,” she told Bernama at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium, here today.
According to Suriati, the initiative is the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of motorcyclists and pillion riders, particularly in reducing the risk of severe injuries that could lead to death or permanent disability.
“Wearing SIRIM-approved helmets is crucial to ensure optimal protection,” she said.
Meanwhile, visitor Mohd Zaihan Zakaria, 49, who left his house in Pasir Mas at 6.40 am to obtain the helmet, said he was aware of the exchange programme from a Facebook post.
“I’ve been using my helmet for over five years, and it’s no longer safe. I’ve been planning to replace it. Alhamdulillah, I am fortunate enough to get it for free today, saving me around RM60,” he added.
