MERSING, July 19 (Bernama) -- Yayasan Johor Corporation (Yayasan JCorp) has planted 60 coral reefs in the waters of Pulau Aur as part of its ongoing commitment to marine ecosystem conservation.

Its chief executive officer Zaidatul Zurita Abdul Rahman said the initiative aims to restore marine habitats and support biodiversity, ensuring ecological balance for future generations.

“This year, we introduced an environmentally friendly approach in collaboration with Reef Check Malaysia, using recycled glass bottles donated by the community as bases for the coral structures,” she said.

She added that corals planted during the first programme in 2023 have shown positive growth of around two centimetres and are now home to more than 10 marine species, including the Bluefaced Angelfish, Regal Angelfish, and False Clown Anemonefish.

The three-day 2025 Coral Reef Rehabilitation Programme saw the participation of 50 volunteers, including JCorp Group staff and six media personnel.

Activities included underwater conservation work and a beach clean-up to raise awareness about the impact of pollution on island ecosystems.

To promote environmental responsibility and unity, participants also took part in recycling-themed games.

A key highlight of the programme was Pentas Seni Johor, a cultural showcase that provided a platform for Pulau Aur residents to express their talents through music and performance.

“We believe every community should have the opportunity to shine — whether in the arts, education, or environmental stewardship,” said Zaidatul Zurita.

Yayasan JCorp also presented cash contributions to Pulau Aur residents as a gesture of care and support. The programme complements the foundation’s broader efforts to protect Johor’s marine ecosystems, including seagrass exploration initiatives in local waters.
