MELAKA, July 19 (Bernama) -- The Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) has introduced an innovative recycling initiative in Kampung Bukit Pulau, Bukit Baru to foster sustainable communities through the One Leader One Village (Santuni MADANI) programme.
SWCorp chief executive officer Khalid Mohamed said the programme includes the construction of a composting facility which uses the Takakura method to convert food waste into organic fertiliser, providing residents with an opportunity to generate income.
“In addition, a community-based recycling platform focusing on the collection of used cooking oil, recyclable household items, electronic and fabric waste has been launched,” he told reporters after officiating the programme, which was also attended by SWCorp Melaka director Zaki Md Nor.
The initiative also features the development of an interactive 3R-themed park for children as an educational space, alongside measures to rehabilitate an abandoned fish pond for recreational and future economic use.
Khalid added that the programme is backed by Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) through the UniMadani grant, with technical support in creating recycled products such as planter boxes, garden furniture and landscape décor.
He said the initiative includes a collaboration with Kolej Komuniti Selandar, which led to the creation of a 3R-themed globe sculpture symbolising the community’s commitment to environmental preservation.
“This initiative empowers youth and the local community to move forward, using the village as a starting point for building a sustainable and competitive green economy at the community level.
“Our goal is to position Kampung Bukit Pulau as a model of sustainability and progress by sharing expertise, creating socio-economic development opportunities, and establishing community businesses based on recyclable waste,” he said.
