KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT) has been very busy this past year.

Its minister Nga Kor Ming set ambitious targets at the start of the year to revive sick housing projects. By the year end, he has shown that they were indeed achievable.

The ministry has salvaged 351 abandoned projects worth RM32.87 billion throughout the country. This has saved nearly 44,000 house buyers from the heartache of losing not just their dream home, but hard-earned savings as well.

Speaking about the ministry’s most notable achievements the past year, Nga said 2023 has been a year of significant firsts for KPKT.

“We have implemented over 5,200 public infrastructure and community projects in the past year, the largest yet throughout the ministry’s history,” he said.

He was also proud to have cultivated a culture of service excellence within the ministry.

“This was done by awarding them with Anugerah Kecemerlangan Menteri, a recognition that has yet to exist within other ministries or related agencies prior to this,” he added.

KPKT has also won 12 local and international awards over the past year, making it a record for the ministry.

One of the more notable ones was the Fire and Rescue Services Department‘s groundbreaking Audio Frequency Intercept System (AFIS), which won the highest categories at the 2023 Public Sector Premier Innovation Awards.

The awards came with a cash prize of RM1 million for the ministry, but Nga decided to extend his appreciation to the winners by gifting them with a month of his salary.

When asked of his plans for the ministry in 2024, Nga told Bernama that the coming year was centred around making KPKT a centre of public service excellence.

“Our main focus will be on ensuring that every policy and its implementation is for the people’s wellbeing,” he said.
