LZS assists those impacted by COVID-19 under Zakat Selangor Peduli

SHAH ALAM, Dec 4 -- The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) does not only care for  asnaf (eligible tithe recipients), but also vulnerable, B40 and M40 groups, as well as helps institutions that are affected by COVID-19 through the Zakat Selangor Peduli programme.

Its head of Asnaf Distribution Operations Division, Mohd Sabirin Mohd Sarbini said LZS had allocated RM69.3 million under the Zakat Selangor Peduli programme for distribution to 59,000 recipients and 431 institutions.

"Until last October, the LZS has distributed RM56.6 million or almost 82 percent of the zakat allocation to the needy through the Zakat Selangor Peduli programme," he told Bernama.

He said the Zakat Selangor Peduli programme involved 19 initiatives with four key  agendas, namely meeting the needs of the poor, alleviating the burden of the vulnerable, rehabilitating religious institutions and assisting frontline workers.

As for LZS, he said, its main agenda is  to provide for the asnaf, including monthly financial and food assistance, their housing and education needs.

For the vulnerable group affected by the impact of COVID-19, such as those from the B40 and M40,  they would receive  zakat assistance of RM500 targeted to 15,000 recipients under Zakat Selangor Peduli for which they have to apply online.

LZS works with residents associations as well as the police  to identify the vulnerable groups in need of assistance, he added.

Mohd Sabirin said that from July until October this year, LZS has helped 95 maahad tahfiz  and 15 religious schools involving an allocation of RM900,000.

LZS also contributed RM300,000 to organise Islamic activities at 60 mosques and also distributed RM112,700 to 28 mosques and suraus for sanitation purposes, he added.

According to Mohd Sabirin, LZS recorded an increase in zakat collection last year, totalling RM913 million.

"There are about 350,000 tithe payers, comprising individuals and organisations in Selangor, out of the total Muslim population of  3.7 million,” he said, adding that some of those residing in Selangor prefer to pay their tithe in other states.

He said based on a study conducted by  LZS, in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in 2016, it was found that LZS needed a total of RM1.02 billion to provide for all the asnaf in the state in 2017.
