JEMPOL, June 9 -- The Orang Asli village headman (Tok Batin) of Kampung Panchor, here, who is the first individual in the community here to receive the COVID-19 vaccine is the best example to convince the Orang Asli community to work together to make the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme a success.
John Baharin Ayom said it was his responsibility as the village community leader to convince the residents not to believe baseless allegations about the vaccine.
"I hope after we receive this vaccination, it can change their perception of the vaccine. The people in my village are still afraid of the vaccine," he told reporters at the Jempol district office hall vaccine centre in Bandar Seri Jempol, today.
He and three other family members are the first Orang Asli in the district to receive the first dose of vaccine.
John Baharin, 55, also explained to his villagers that they did not have to worry about the vaccine as almost all the frontline workers had completed receiving their two-dose jabs.
He said the approach of health workers and district officials coming to the Orang Asli villages to help residents to register and receive the vaccines was the best way to expedite the vaccination process.
Meanwhile, the COVID-19 coordinator of the Jempol district health centre, Dr Ismul Adham Zaini said only 133 of the 2,280 Orang Asli in the district had registered for vaccination.
He said to speed up the vaccination process, health workers would move to the villages to administer the vaccine.
