KUCHING, Feb 25 -- The total number of fatalities from COVID-19 infection in Sarawak rose to 78 with two more deaths reported in Sibu today, while 219 new cases have been detected in the state.
The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) in a statement said the 77th fatal case involved a 74-year-old local woman who was being treated at Sibu Hospital for fever and breathing difficulty. She died on Feb 24.
"The 78th fatal case involved a local man, aged 90, who was also a patient at Sibu Hospital after the close contact screening found him to be positive for the virus and he passed away today.
“Besides that, 219 new infection cases were detected in Sarawak today, bringing the cumulative number in the state to 8,869,” it added.
Meanwhile, the Sarawak State Health Department today announced a new cluster, the Jalan Ho Pin Cluster in Samarahan district, which is a community cluster involving the districts of Samarahan, Serian and Kuching.
The infections are believed to be due to home visits involving relatives and friends during the Chinese New Year celebration between Feb 11 and 14.
To date, 14 positive cases including the index case have been detected in this cluster.
