IPOH, Oct 30 -- The Seri Manjung Vocational College (KVSM) in Manjung has put in place new normal measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic that can be replicated in any other educational institution.

The college has introduced measures beyond the guidelines the Education Ministry (MOE) has set for all staff and students of educational institutions to adhere to.

KVSM director Mazlin Mohd Zain said the college staff have developed a special application to record the body temperature of students and teachers as well as a Google Forms method of recording student attendance.

He said the teachers and students, including those living in the hostel, need to have their body temperature taken before entering the college and the information will be stored in the database to facilitate monitoring.

Also, as a new normal feature, KVSM, which offers certificate and diploma programmes in electrical and electronics technology, has provided a portable sink at each staircase and in front of the labs to encourage students and teachers to wash their hands frequently.

Mazlin said portable sinks are more practical because they can be placed anywhere in the college and the cost of production is also much lower than that for permanent sinks.

"We only need a metal frame to place the sink and a water container. When the water in the container is almost empty, cleaners will refill it, so there will be no problem for the students or teachers to wash their hands frequently," he said.

More interestingly, KVSM has created a special WhatsApp group for class leaders and the canteen operator for the purpose of ordering food during recess as eating in the canteen is not permitted right now.

"Every day, the canteen operator will send the menu for the next day to the class leaders who will take the orders from the students. During recess, the class leaders will collect the food from the canteen and distribute to the students under their charge for eating in the classrooms," he said.

Mazlin said physical distancing is also being practised, both in class and during practical sessions in the labs as well as in the dining hall and hostel.

"KVSM has no problem in implementing physical distancing because we have ample space in the classrooms, labs, dining hall and the hostel which accommodates a maximum of six students per dormitory," he said.

Muhammad Irfan M. Yunus, 17, a student pursuing a diploma in electrical technology, said he is responsible for taking food orders from his classmates and described the WhatsApp group as a very convenient feature.

"After getting the menu, I will inform my classmates and by the afternoon I will send their orders to the canteen operator.

“A classmate will help me collect the money according to the price of the food. It’s very easy because there is no need to queue in the canteen,” he said.
