KOTA KINABALU, Oct 28 -- The Sabah government today approved an additional RM160 million in Bantuan Prihatin COVID-19 aid to assist those hard hit by the pandemic, said Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor.

He said the funds will be disbursed through various Sabah ministries in the form of monetary aid, benefiting those in the agriculture and tourism sectors including guides, porters and divemasters; transport (taxi, bus, lorry), hawkers, orphans and single mothers among others.

"...of this amount, RM1 million will be channelled to universities to help tertiary students affected by the pandemic," he said in a statement issued after chairing the weekly Sabah Cabinet Meeting here today.

Hajiji had on Oct 1 announced Bantuan Prihatin COVID-19 aid totalling RM50 million.

Meanwhile, Hajiji said the state government will establish the Sabah Economic Council to discuss more ways forward to assist the state’s economic recovery.

"Membership of the Council, to comprise captains of industries, businessmen, NGOs and academicians, will be announced soon," he said.
