COVID-19: 147 new cases reported, three more deaths - Health DG

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 -- The number of new COVID-19 cases in Malaysia jumped by 147 cases while three more patients died today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the new development takes the overall total for the outbreak to 10,505 cases and 133 deaths.

He said the new cases involve 143 local transmissions and four import cases.

For local transmission, he said it involved 115 Malaysians and 28 foreigners while the import cases involved three locals and one foreigner who returned from India ( three cases) and Indonesia (one case) , he said.

“For local transmission, 134 cases were detected in Sabah; five in Kedah; Selangor (two) and one each in Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan,” he said in a statement today.

On the details of fatalities, Dr Noor Hisham said two cases were detected in Sabah and another in Kedah.

He said the 131st death victim (Case no. 10495) was an Indonesian woman aged 48, with underlying health issues such diabetes and hypertension.

“The woman experienced symptoms such as fatigue, vomiting, cough and fever on Sept 14. The case was brought Tawau Hospital in Sabah on Sept 18 in semi conscious state.

“Her condition deteriorated and was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) on Sept 19 and was confirmed dead on the same day at 10.20 pm. A COVID-19 screening turned out positive on Sept 22,” he said.

The 132nd death (Case no, 10493) was a 54-year-old local man who was treated at Semporna Hospital on Sept 18 after experiencing fever, cough and breathing difficulties.

Dr Noor Hisham said the condition of the man worsened and he was later transferred to Tawau Hospital on Sept 20 in the intensive card unit (ICU) before being confirmed dead yesterday. A COVID-19 screening on the same day showed the case was positive for the virus.

Death number 133 (Case no. 9224) involved a Malaysian man, 72 who is suffering from stroke and was a close contact of Case no. 9124 (deceased) from Tawar cluster.

“The patient who was asymptomatic, was found positive for COVID-19 on Aug 19 and warded at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Alor Setar. His condition worsened and was transferred to the ICU before being was pronounced dead at 3.40 am (Sept 23),” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said there were 39 recoveries today, bringing the cumulative total recoveries to 9,602 cases or 91.4 per cent from the overall cases.

To date, eight cases are being treated at ICU with two of them requiring respiratory assistance.
