PATTANI, July 30  -- A baby boy, who spent five months apart from his Thai parents due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of the Malaysia-Thailand border, is expected to return to his parents in Pattani, southern Thailand on Saturday.

The youngest child of the couple Nurhalisa Jehawae, 18 and her husband Muhammad Tifyoleah, 28, who hail from Pattani was born when she was seven months pregnant at Kajang Hospital, Selangor, Malaysia on February 27.

The couple were forced to leave the baby who needed to be hospitalised to be monitored by doctors as they had to renew their visa which was expiring on March 18.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic and closure of the Malaysia-Thailand border gates, the couple could not re-enter Malaysia to take their child who is still at Kajang Hospital.

Nurhalisa, who is a shop assistant at a restaurant in Kajang, claimed that they had lost contact with the hospital when they misplaced the hospital phone number.

The couple only found out about the condition of their youngest child after being contacted by the embassy.

Through public assistance and donations, the couple managed to raise enough money to settle the hospital bill which including maternity and delivery costs amounting to almost RM30,000.

Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC) Secretary-General Rear Admiral Somkiart Polprayoon said the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur was preparing to bring home a baby boy who was separated from his family.

“The registration process was completed yesterday. The hospital bills will be settled today.

“The baby will be sent to the Thailand-Malaysia border in a specially chartered ambulance. The hospital medical team will be with the baby.

“The baby is expected to arrive at the Sadao Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex (CIQ), Songkhla on Saturday and will be handed over to his parents,” he said.

The baby and his mother would be taken to Pattani Hospital for mandatory quarantine, he added.
