BEAUFORT, July 6 -- A total of 81,345 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) were prepared by volunteers from the Community Development Department (Kemas) nationwide to date for frontliners in the fight against COVID-19.

Rural Development Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad said the volunteers comprised 1,002 skilled personnel, staff and participants of Kemas classes.

“Some 365 teachers with sewing skills along with sewing classes participants had been preparing the PPEs since March.

“In Sabah, a total of 6,650 sets were prepared by 70 Kemas volunteers from Sandakan, Penampang, Silam dan Kudat,” he said at a ceremony to hand over certificates of appreciation to Kemas volunteers involved in the PPE project in Kampung Muhibbah here.

In another development, he said the government was seriously looking into issues concerning Internet reach in the rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak.

He said the matter was being discussed with Telekom Malaysia (TM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
