KUALA LUMPUR, July 3  -- The consecration of Rev Steven Lawrence as the 5th Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia on Saturday will be carried out strictly in accordance with the rules governing church services issued by the National Unity Ministry as per the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO).

This first consecration and installation of a bishop during the COVID-19 pandemic is set for 10 am at the Zion Lutheran Cathedral in Brickfields here, said outgoing Bishop Rt Rev Dr Solomon Rajah, 65.

Rev Steven, 42, who was elected bishop on Nov 9 last year, has been a pastor for 13 years. He is married to Susan Ann and they have three children.

He takes over from Bishop Solomon who assumed the office in 2009.

Bishop Solomon said he was confident that Rev Steven could take the church though these challenging times as he had proven himself as a leader with great potential.

He also said that the traditional procession of bishops and pastors will not be carried out due to social distancing rules and that bishops from abroad could not attend the ceremony due to health control restrictions.
