COVID-19: Two new cases, active cases at 164

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 -- New COVID-19 cases in Malaysia remained at a single digit with two cases reported today, bringing the cumulative figure to 8,639, with 164 active cases, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said one of the new cases was a local transmission and the other, an imported case.

“Both involve Malaysians. No local transmission among foreigners was reported today,” he said in a statement today.

Elaborating on the local transmission, he said it was detected at the Kota Belud Hospital in Sabah during a pre-referral screening of a patient.

Noor Hisham said four COVID-19 patients were still being treated in the intensive care unit, with one requiring ventilator support.

He said there had been no COVID-19 fatalities for the 16th consecutive day, keeping the death toll at 121, or 1.4 per cent of the total number of cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said 20 cases had recovered and were discharged today, raising the cumulative figure for recoveries to 8,354, or 96.7 per cent of the total number of cases.

Since the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) was implemented on June 10, the daily new cases totalled 303.

“The spread of daily cases throughout the RMCO ranges between one and two digits. This proves that 'recovery’ in the country has begun. This recovery is in terms of balancing life and livelihood,” he added.

He reminded the people not to be lulled into complacency by the declining trend in new cases but instead to continue adhering to the standard operating procedure (SOP).

“As stated by the World Health Organisation director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom via virtual briefing, the COVID-19 pandemic has not ended yet and, in fact, globally cases are increasing. He has also warned that the COVID-19 situation worldwide is expected to worsen,” he added.
