KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 -- The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has released the Malaysian Economic Statistics Review report which could help the government and stakeholders accelerate their strategic policy to effectively address the economic crisis in confronting the challenges facing the rakyat.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the comprehensive report produced by the DOSM provided structured information on Malaysia’s current economic scenario.

“The Malaysian Economic Statistics Review (MESR) is DOSM's first initiative in generating official statistics which were reflected through a series of economic scenarios for businesses and households facing COVID-19," he said in a statement today.

Commenting on the report, Mohd Uzir said the pandemic would slow down the economy and cause high unemployment and many weaknesses.

Therefore, he said the government had taken drastic measures to contain COVID-19 and implemented various programmes to reduce its impact on the economy.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has seen increasing demand for economic and social statistics from the government to facilitate efforts to mitigate the challenges of the current situation," he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Uzir said the people were also interested in assessing and understanding this extraordinary crisis to address the threats to their survival.
