JASIN, March 16 --  A senior citizen who fled from the Jasin hospital here yesterday after showing symptoms of COVID-19 was eventually detected by a special task force from the hospital and later brought to the Melaka hospital for further treatment.

Jasin district police chief DSP Mispani Hamdan said the 65-year-old was one of those who had participated in the tabligh gathering at the Seri Petaling mosque in Kuala Lumpur from Feb 28-March 1.

“The man who was part of the Perlis tabligh congregation went to the Jasin hospital for screening yesterday and was found to have COVID-19 symptoms.

“While being held for further treatment, he fled, which prompted the attending doctor to lodge a police report at 5.30pm,” he told reporters here today.

News of the incident went viral on social media shortly after.

Mispani said as soon as the report was received, police mounted a search for the man, and found him shortly after at 7pm.

Meanwhile, he said so far, 30 participants of the tabligh gathering from Jasin have tested negative for the virus.

“I advise all the Tabligh participants, especially those from Jasin district, to voluntarily undergo screening at any hospital or health clinic. It’s better to prevent than allow a situation to get worse,” he said.
