JOHOR BAHRU, May 24 (Bernama) -- The Community Development Department (KEMAS) achieved an impressive feat on the international culinary stage when 48 out of its 49 participants won medals at the World Chefs Championship (WCC) 2026 held here.
KEMAS said eight participants were crowned Excellent Gold winners, while 10 won gold medals, 24 secured silver, and six obtained bronze in the three-day competition that ended yesterday and involved participants from more than 40 countries, including Thailand, Taiwan, and Singapore.
“This achievement proves the capability of KEMAS personnel in mastering international-standard technical skills, while also showcasing their ability to elevate local culinary identity and heritage onto the world stage,” KEMAS said in a statement.
The competition featured 50 categories in cooking, bakery, pastry, and creative culinary arts, making it one of the most competitive platforms in the industry.
KEMAS’ participation comprised instructors, skills training participants, and state representatives who competed in various categories, including Modern Free Style 1 Tier Wedding Cake, Creative Mooncake, Traditional Cuisine, Pasta Challenge, Pastry and Bun, as well as several other creative culinary art categories.
The department said the combination of creativity, innovation, and modern presentation in each competition entry also highlighted the value of skills instilled through KEMAS’ skills education programmes, particularly in cooking and culinary arts.
It said the achievement serves as proof that KEMAS continues to remain relevant as a highly skilled human capital development institution, not only in producing competent instructors and trainees, but also in nurturing local talent capable of competing at the global level.
The fifth edition of the WCC 2026 also made history after being recognised by ASEAN Records and Asia Records as the largest recurring international culinary championship based on the number of participating countries, competing chefs, and international judges involved.
