Lecturers speak in dialects to educate public on COVID-19 vaccination

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 -- The use of various dialects in the dissemination of information on the COVID-19 vaccine will resonate well with the speakers.

Realising this, a group of lecturers from the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) took the initiative to educate the public on the COVID-19 vaccine via several video clips using different dialects spoken by Malaysians to promote vaccination and curb the spread of the COVID-19 infection.

The faculty’s dean Prof Dr Ishak Ahmad said the effort was carried out to increase public knowledge and reduce their apprehension over getting the jab under the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme.

"We see that turnouts (for vaccination) are very low, so the approach is to use the dialects used by local communities, approaching them using the language they understand.

"Currently, the videos feature faculty lecturers because they have the ability to better convey facts about vaccines in layman terms," he told Bernama today.

The video clips can be viewed on the faculty’s Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/watch/fstukmbangi/

He said future clips will feature virologists and students who have received their COVID-19 vaccination.
