MALAYSIA’S SMES ON RIGHT TRACK FOR IR4.0 ADOPTION: EX-MITII SEC-GEN

18/07/2019 07:23 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- The introduction of the National Policy on Industry 4.0 (INDUSTRY4WRD) and the formulation of the Fourth Industrial Masterplan have put Malaysia’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on the right track in embracing IR 4.0.

“That is a good start, and we are in the right position to embrace and promote IR 4.0 to our SMEs.

“That would be the only way for the SMEs to grow bigger and globally in the future,” said former secretary-general of the International Trade and Industry Ministry, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Mamat.

Abdul Rahman, who is currently the chairman of Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), was speaking at a press conference after officiating the pre-launch of International Smart Manufacturing Conference 2019 (ISMC 2019) here today.

Earlier, he also witnessed the signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between ISMC 2019 organiser Lean Smart Industry Solutions PLT with Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), International Council for SME & Entrepreneurship-Malaysia (ICSMEE), Kuala Lumpur International Chamber of Commerce (KLICC), as well as Hokkaido University.

Asked about the readiness of local SMEs in adopting IR4.0 technologies, Abdul Rahman said given that the idea of IR4.0 is still new in Malaysia, industry players need to be educated and change the traditional way of doing businesses that they have been used to.

“But there are some cases where the technologies or machines are already available in the factories.

“What they need to do perhaps is to upgrade them, which is also the cheapest way to move towards the IR4.0 era,” he opined.

Scheduled to be held from Sept 18-20, 2019, the three-day ISMC 2019 aims at sharing knowledge on the successful implementation of the foundational readiness, people right skilling, manufacturing process capabilities, predictability of machines and processes, and the application of the advanced digital technologies of IR 4.0 among 600 local and international industry players and experts.

According to the ISMC 2019 statement released today, the knowledge sharing aims to achieve world-class productivity, zero defect quality delivery and digitally connected factories, increase global and customer responsiveness, as well as reduce cost and lead times.

“Topics which will be covered at the ISMC 2019 include accessing the current gap, building the right foundation, upgrading people and processes, gauging and monitoring readiness, and implementing advanced technologies of IR 4.0,” it added.
