Controlled items smuggled, repacked and sold in neighbouring country - GOF

PASIR MAS, April 22  -- The General Operations Force (GOF) has uncovered the existence of a ‘small industry’ involved in the sale of controlled items in a neighbouring country smuggled out through Sungai Golok.

The GOF’s Seventh Battalion (GOF7) commanding officer Supt Azhari Nusi said items such as cooking oil would be smuggled out little by little to the collection point before being repackaged in the other country.

He said the repackaged oil would be sold at almost double the original price in Malaysia, but it was still in high demand there.

“Apart from cooking oil, many other controlled items are smuggled into neighboring countries through ‘rat lanes’ at illegal bases, such as flour, sugar and fuel.

"Subsidised goods provided by the Malaysian government to the people should be fully utilised and should not be misused for the benefit of certain parties," he said during a press conference at the GOF’s Lubok Setol Tactical Headquarters here today.

Azhari said in the latest incident, GOF7 managed to seize 8,415 kg of cooking oil stored in four vehicles, namely Proton Saga, Proton Aeroback and two Hicom lorries.

He said the items and assets, estimated to be worth a total of RM117,600, were seized when the team conducted a raid behind a shop in Kampung Salor, here, at 6 pm yesterday, with the assistance of personnel from the Kelantan Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).

"All the items and the case have been handed over to the Kelantan KPDNHEP for further investigation under Section 22 (1) of the Control of Supplies Act 1961," he said.
