KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) is working with related agencies to collect data to identify local start-ups that have great potential to grow in the creative industry sector.

Chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said: “We need to have a dashboard that we can monitor start-ups so we can track in terms of profit, total investments and capital outflow. We need that information for the purpose of the 12th Malaysia Plan among others.

"This is a way for us to identify which companies have great potential to grow, and can be guided," he told Bernama.

He said the corporation found that most of the start-up companies used the incentives given just to start a business but there was no development.

Syed Ibrahim is optimistic that the move can also help MDEC to identify new talents in Malaysia, especially in the creative industry sector.

Meanwhile, in the Ruang Bicara: Jelajah Saya Digital (JSD) programme on Bernama TV on Thursday, Syed Ibrahim said MDEC will continue to implement digital transformation initiatives and digital economy development throughout the country to make Malaysia the ASEAN Digital Hub.

He said the government and agencies such as MDEC need to work together to ensure that the opportunities available in the digital economy can be utilised optimally.

"Our hope is that all Malaysians can take this opportunity to improve the rakyat’s digital skills through JSD," he said.

MDEC introduced the My Digital Campaign since 2021 and travelled to more than 50 locations across the country through the JSD series.

He said the My Digital Campaign was introduced to help people improve their digital skills, master digital through readied platforms so they can adapt to the digital economy.

Through this year's campaign, MDEC will continue several successful programmes by focusing on four main focuses, namely "I am Digital Literacy", "I am Digital Business", "I am Digital Freelance" and "I am Digital Career".

In order to achieve the goal of digitally empowering the people, MDEC also provides various programmes including the eUsahawan, eRezeki, Global Online Workforce (GLOW) and 100 Go Digital.

"The next JSD which will be organised at the Bukit Jambul Complex, Penang on March 9-10 gives an opportunity to individuals, traders or small entrepreneurs to promote their products on social media sites provided at the relevant JSD," he said.
