DOSM-UUM COLLABORATION PRODUCES 14 MASTER'S IN ECONOMY GRADUATES

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- Fourteen Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) officers were conferred the Master’s in Economy (MEc.) degree at the 36th Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) convocation ceremony today. 

DOSM, in a statement today, said the officers pursued the MEc. degree under a collaborative study programme between the department and UUM, through an initiative of the Association of Statisticians, Department of Statistics Malaysia.

The UUM School of Economics, Finance, and Banking MEc. was aimed at empowering the officers to become highly knowledgeable, competent, creative, and innovative employees with integrity and skills in various core areas in the field of economics.   

“A total of 25 officers of various job grades joined the programme which was a combination of assignments and dissertations, on a part-time basis,” it said.

With the success of this first group, DOSM said it would review the experience and consider continuing the programme. 

DOSM added that there is room and opportunities to expand the Master’s degree programme to other faculties that offer new strategic fields such as data analytics and quantitative science.

It is hoped that such programmes can be continued through the strategic cooperation between DOSM and UUM on the National Statistics System Strengthening platform, the UUM and DOSM Strategic Plan, and the Malaysian Statistics Training Institute Strategic Plan, to empower the human capital capacity of the department, read the statement. 

“In UUM’s 35th convocation, we had one officer who received the Master’s in Economy. There are another six officers who will receive their scrolls in the next convocation,” the statement said.
