KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- Malayan Banking Bhd and the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) firmly believe that the banking industry will continue to thrive under the stewardship of new Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor Datuk Shaik Abdul Rasheed Abdul Ghaffour.
Maybank group president and chief executive officer and ABM chairman Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli said the banking industry would certainly benefit from the BNM governor’s experience to enable Malaysia to continue to progress and navigate through the headwinds.
“Abdul Rasheed’s impeccable track record, vast knowledge and experience will be key in leading BNM, one of the most respected central banks in the world,” he said in a statement.
Khairussaleh also said as a true home-grown talent, throughout his career with the central bank, Abdul Rasheed provided expertise to drive the nation’s economy by playing key roles in developing high-impact financial blueprints.
“His extensive understanding of the domestic, regional and global economy is a huge advantage for our country, and we firmly believe that the banking industry will continue to thrive under his leadership.
“In this regard, we look forward to continuing working closely with Abdul Rasheed and the team at BNM,” he added.
BNM yesterday announced that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to appoint Abdul Rasheed as BNM governor for a five-year term effective July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2028.
He will assume the position from Tan Sri Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus, who completes her five-year term on June 30, 2023.
Meanwhile, Khairussaleh said Nor Shamsiah had been instrumental in driving the central bank during her tenure and played significant roles in introducing reforms and forward-looking initiatives that have helped the nation accelerate its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to serve alongside her and I thank Nor Shamsiah for her contributions,” Khairussaleh added.
