LIMA’23: UMT EXPANDS COLLABORATION WITH SIX INDUSTRY PLAYERS

25/05/2023 08:44 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, May  25 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA’23), today expanded its network of cooperation through the signing of memoranda of agreement (MoA) and memoranda of understanding (MoU) with six industry players.

The collaborations involved Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd (PKT), Holistics Lab Sdn Bhd (HLSB), Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) and MSET Inflatable Composit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MSET).

UMT Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Abd Ghaffar inked the memoranda with PTP head of Human Capital Management Division Jaizal Kamar Jalaludin; PKT Group chief executive and managing director Datuk Seri Michael Tio; HLSB chief executive officer Ts Dr Mohd Iskandar Iliyas; MIGHT joint chairman Tan Sri Dr Zakri Abd Hamid; MYSA deputy director-general (Technical Services and Operations) Nik Mazlina Nik Mustapha; and MSET Group managing director Aminudin Mat Yusof.

All the memoranda were signed simultaneously at the Pre-Function Room of the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre in Langkawi and witnessed by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup.

Mazlan said that among the main focuses of the MoA with PTP involved the development of studies in the field of maritime and logistics through work-based learning (WBL) for UMT students as well as platform sharing for research and development (R&D) in maritime technology and port management.

“In addition, the collaboration involved the transfer of knowledge, sharing of experiences and ideas, organisation of conferences and also publications,” he said in a statement issued by UMT.

He said UMT’s Mou with PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd, meanwhile, involved the sharing of knowledge, training, facilities and sponsorship that will benefit about 100 students of UMT’s Faculty of Maritime Studies.

“They will be involved in the Smart Logistician 2023 programme of the National Economic Recovery Plan (PENJANA), which uses training modules related to the logistics industry and the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in warehousing operations. In addition, successful students will be offered a job at PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd.

“The collaboration also opens up opportunities for UMT researchers to conduct studies and research to make Malaysia the main logistics hub in ASEAN. This study will also involve Malaysian industry players supported by the Malaysian Productivity Corporation,” he said.

He explained that with the expertise possessed by UMT in the field of shipping and logistics operations, UMT researchers can conduct studies related to efforts to improve the level of efficiency in governance and also the operations of logistics companies in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Mazlan described the signing of the collaboration between UMT and HLSB as a strategic step, considering that the company is one of the leaders in halal-related training and development in Malaysia.

“Indirectly, this collaboration will have a positive impact on the transport, logistics and supply chain sectors in Malaysia,” he said.

He also said that the strategic collaboration with MIGHT and MYSA is to produce a modern catamaran with the help of MSET, which will build the prototype of the boat.

“UMT is taking a step forward in an effort to produce a new fishing boat design with modern features as well as the latest fishing equipment capable of doubling the catch and further increasing the income of the group.

“The success in producing a modern catamaran would be able to attract young people to venture into the field of fishing and further contribute to guaranteeing sufficient food supply,” he said.
