KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 (Bernama) -- Shihgang District Farmers’ Association of Taichung City, Taiwan is ready to export 20 metric tonnes of a mandarin-sweet orange hybrid known as honey tangerine or honey murcott to Malaysia.

Director of the marketing department Fu Yu Chin said the association, together with key exporters from the area, including the Dongshi District Farmers’ Association, are also planning to export more fruits to Singapore and Malaysia in the future.

“A total of 100 metric tonnes of murcotts are expected to be exported this year,” he said in a statement today.

Fu said that murcotts, known for their thin peel, delightful fragrance, delicate pulps, sweet, juicy and somehow sour, are in season between December to February and the cultivation area of 598 hectares in Taichung would yield an annual output of 11,010 metric tonnes.

“Hence, this makes Taichung the largest murcott production area in Taiwan (with) the fruits mainly grown in the Dongshi, Shihgang and Xinshe districts,” he said.

The Taichung honey murcotts will be available from March 25, 2023, at many merchants across Malaysia including Harvest Impact, Jaya Grocer, Aeon, Cold Storage, Star Grocer and Wholefood Express.

Meanwhile, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia director of the economic division James Chang said the bilateral trade between Malaysia and Taiwan hit a record high of US$37 billion (US$1=RM4.42) last year, a growth of 36 per cent as compared with 2021.

Simultaneously, Chang said he urged the Malaysian government to support Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership to boost trade performance between Taiwan and Malaysia further.
