SHAH ALAM, March 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will host the first-ever International Symposium on Active Ageing (ISAA) from Aug 11-13, which will provide an opportunity for delegates to gain new knowledge and learn innovative strategies  in encouraging seniors to pursue active lifestyles.

The conference, which will feature 23 speakers from nine countries, will discover methods to implement efficient healthcare and preventative solutions for the ageing population in Malaysia and throughout the world, according to Prof Dr Muhammad Lee, Chief Executive Officer of ISAA 2023.

“The conference will bring together professionals, researchers and individuals from various countries to discuss the promotion of healthy and active ageing through nutrition, exercise, technology and social engagement.

“The delegates will be taught on wheelchair safety, the use of walking aids, bed transfer and mobilisation and home-based exercises. Our ultimate goal of the conference is to deliberate ways in slowing down the human’s ageing process through physical exercises,” he told Bernama after attending the soft launch of ISAA 2023 officiated by  Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

The importance of core strength for seniors, exercise technology for the aged, cardiac arrest, and community fitness programmes for the ageing population are some of the major topics that will be tackled, according to Muhammad Lee.

Meanwhile, Azalina in her speech during the event said Malaysia will become an ageing nation by 2030 with people aged 60 years and over surpassing 15 per cent of the working population, while stressing that the nation must prepare having sufficient elderly care professionals namely geriatricians, nurses and other health care providers including family members.

The minister, who enjoys canoeing and mountain biking, established Malaysia's first Active Ageing Centre for those above the age of 60, in her Pengerang parliamentary district, better known as "Rakan Aktif Parlimen Pengerang," which among other things, prescribes exercise programmes to improve the participants' heart health and muscular skeletal system.

She said the centre will ensure the population in Malaysia will age gracefully with minimum dependency.
