BATU KAWAN, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia-based leading automation solutions provider Greatech Technology Bhd (Greatech) is investing approximately RM1.3 billion to expand its fourth manufacturing plant in Batu Kawan.

Its chief executive officer Datuk Tan Eng Kee said that the new 500,000 square feet (sq ft) facility with an estimated capital expenditure of RM200 million as well as an estimated operating expenditure of RM1.1 billion  is designated to manufacture solar products.

"The new facility constructed across the 4.69 hectares (11.58 acres) at Batu Kawan Industrial Park (B.K.I.P) is expected to operate by the end of this year.

"On completion, Greatech will have a total combined floor area of more than 1.2 million sq ft," he told reporters during the plant's groundbreaking ceremony officiated by Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow here today.

Tan said that the new plant is expected to create about 500 employment opportunities to support the ecosystem with its ever-growing demands.

Meanwhile, Chow who is also the Member of Parliament for Batu Kawan, said that Penang's homegrown companies held critical roles in promoting the growth of the machinery and equipment (M&E) sector in the state.

"On the investment front, Penang is one of the top contributors to the national approved manufacturing investments with RM9.2 billion recorded from January to September 2022.

"Investments in the M&E industry alone totalled RM7.3 billion from 2020 to September 2022, accounting for 57 per cent of the country's total. This has placed us on the right trajectory to become a global front-to-back end equipment manufacturing hub," he added.

Greatech started in 1997 and is headquartered in Bayan Lepas with facilities in Bayan Lepas, Batu Kawan and the United States of America.
