MAA EXPECTS MORE THAN 2,631 EV UNITS TO BE SOLD THIS YEAR

19/01/2023 05:56 PM

PETALING JAYA, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has projected the sales of electric vehicles (EVs) to be much higher this year compared to the 2,631 units sold in 2022.

Its president Datuk Aishah Ahmad said this is due to many new EV models to be introduced in the market and sales tax incentives which will spur the sales of EVs this year.

“The projected total industry volume (TIV) of 650,000 units for 2023 would include sales of hybrid vehicles and EV units,” she said during a press conference on motor traders and manufacturers’ performance here today.

Earlier, Aishah said the projected TIV would account for sales of passenger and commercial vehicles to achieve 585,000 and 65,000 units respectively this year.

Aishah said MAA would also appeal to the government to consider extending the EV incentives for a longer period until 2030 and not just on a yearly basis.

“We think that extending the incentives on a year-on-year basis is not enough (as) you have to put in a lot of investments and all these investors must be confident that EVs would continue to sell,” she added.
