TESDEC EYES UP TO RM3.5 MLN REVENUE ANNUALLY FROM MINI-HYDRO PLANT PROJECT

11/01/2023 08:27 PM

KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- Tesdec Hydropower Sdn Bhd, which is ultimately owned by the Terengganu government, expects to generate annual revenue of RM3 million to RM3.5 million from a mini-hydro power plant to be built at Sungai Pelagat, Besut.

Chairman Saiful Azmi Suhaili said construction work on the three-megawatt plant would begin this month and was expected to be completed by May 2027.

“The renewable energy (RE) generated will be sold to Tenaga Nasional Bhd to ensure a sustainable electrical supply,” he said after the letter of award (LOA) signing ceremony between Tesdec Hydropower and Minetech Resources Bhd’s subsidiary Techmile Resources Sdn Bhd here today.

The LOA is for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the power plant valued at RM36.71 million.

Saiful Azmi said the project would also function as an early flood warning system for the local communities apart from having other environmental benefits such as reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

According to him, a measurement device placed at the river's source on the top of the hill would provide early warning on the water level during heavy rain.

“This will provide a signal or early indication to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage on the water level if there is a headwater phenomenon or downpour.

“Before the water can flow down, the local residents can be prepared for the possibility of flooding,” he said.

The LOA signing was witnessed by Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

Tesdec Hydropower is a sub-subsidiary of Terengganu government-owned Tesdec Bhd through its subsidiary, Tesdec Services Sdn Bhd.
