PAGOH, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI) aims to increase coconut production for the domestic market by 50 per cent next year, compared to 2020.

Agriculture Department director-general Datuk Zahimi Hassan said the target of increasing the amount of coconut production was in line with the increase in coconut-based products.

He said in 2020, the area of coconut plantations in Peninsular Malaysia was 55,573.1 hectares (ha) with a production of 451,693.1 metric tonnes.

“For Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, the area of coconut plantations cover 29,368.9ha with a total production of 109,291.3 metric tonnes.

“The three states that have the area of coconut plantations in this country are Sabah, Sarawak and Johor, but Johor has the highest production with 106,723.2 metric tonnes,” he said after the 50th International Cocotech, Conference & Exhibition at the Jorak Agricultural Centre, here today.

Among the attendees were International Coconut Community representative Benjamin R. Madrigal and Samoa Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Maiava Fuimaono Tito Asafo.

Zahimi said the programme was organised involving delegations from coconut-producing countries such as Samoa, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia and Thailand.

He said a total of 300 participants were informed about the methods of coconut cultivation and the products produced in this country from coconuts.

“These delegates will see for themselves the methods of coconut planting, coconut seeding, coconut product exhibitions and the Internet of Things or better known as smart agriculture for coconut cultivation,” he said.

Zahimi noted that the current coconut market is only focused on the domestic market with 70 per cent involving the production of coconut-based products, but there are plans to market them to foreign markets.
