SARAWAK WELCOMES SIRIM'S PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH BRANCH OFFICES IN BINTULU AND MIRI

KUCHING, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- Sarawak welcomes the proposal by SIRIM Berhad as the country’s major standard and industrial research agency to set up two branch offices in Bintulu and Miri, respectively.

Its Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh said this would further expand the facilities provided by SIRIM Berhad in Sarawak.

"The Sarawak government will support the idea of establishing the two new branch offices,” he said after officiating at the SIRIM-Sarawak Industries Engagement Programme, here, today.

The programme with 200 participants emphasised the importance of research and development and managing energy and quality, as well as training, testing and certification.

Len Talif said the state ministry’s support would include identifying the suitable sites for the proposed two new branch offices of SIRIM.

He said with the opening of more SIRIM branch offices in the state, the industrial products for testing and certification would no longer needed to be sent to the agency’s branch offices in the peninsula.

Meanwhile, SIRIM Berhad chairman Tan Sri Dr Ir Ahmad Tajuddin Ali said SIRIM left it to the related agencies in Sarawak on when the new branch offices could be ready.

"We (SIRIM Berhad) can do it if wanted by the state authority as we don’t have the allocation from the federal government; we need to look for our own funding,” he added.

On whether test labs would be provided at the new branch offices, he said this would depend on the request for the labs.

“We will be working with the related agencies in the state but currently, our priority is to expand our activities at the SIRIM Kuching branch office," he added.
